Overview

The 5 days lowland gorillas and Lake Kivu are among the most safaris in DR Congo. This safari takes you to Kahuzi-Biega National Park home to rare eastern Lowland gorillas and then Lake Kivu, the biggest water body in DR Congo. Gorilla trekking will allow you to understand the behaviours and characters of these unique species for an hour.

While on Lake Kivu, take part in different activities like swimming, snorkelling, beach soccer, boat cruising and many more. The tour will begin and end in Kigali Rwanda which means that you will enjoy the beautiful scenery covered with different hills while in Rwanda. Also, have a short city tour in Kigali where prominent attractions like the genocide memorial grounds, Kimironko market, art and gallery centres and many more others.

Detailed Itinerary

Day1. Kigali Rwanda to Kahuzi-Biega National Park in DR Congo

The safari will begin when the driver guide meets you from the agreed point let’s say hotel or airport and immediately transfer to Kahuzi-Biega National Park in DR Congo. Pass through the countryside of Rwanda as you enjoy different hills, green vegetation and beautiful Rwandan people.

Kahuzi Biega National Park is found between two mountains and these are Kahuzi and Biega. This park is known to be home to the eastern Lowland Gorillas and the park covers over 6,000 square kilometres. Arrive and head to the booked lodge for your dinner and overnight.

Day2. Lowland gorilla trekking

Wake up on breakfast, then transfer to the park offices for briefing about the gorilla trekking experience. The park ranger guide will explain well how the experience will be conducted allowing you to get used to the rules and regulations, gorilla behaviours, forest inhabitants, expectations, what you need to have like a camera and Binoculars and many more others. The search will begin with the guidance of the park ranger guide as he explains all the attractions you meet. On meeting the biggest primates-low land gorillas, spend an hour in their presence capturing great memories in the wild. Tas the name suggests, the lowland gorillas can be located in the lowland areas of Mt Kahuzi and Mt Biega. After the experience, head back to the lodge with a leisurely lunch and evening.

Day3. Head to Lake Kivu

Make a transfer to Lake Kivu which borders Rwanda and DR Congo. This freshwater lake is amazing as you get to learn about the lifestyle of the locals around this Lake. Fishing is the main activity on this Lake and this means that if you love fish, then prepare to enjoy fresh one on this day. Arrive and have a leisurely evening at one of the booked accommodation sites.

Day4. Full day on Lake Kivu

Take a full day exploring the beautiful Lake as you take part in a boat cruise where you get a chance to explore the Idjwi island the only island in this Lake. There is a great history on this island you will learn, and take part in different activities like swimming, fishing, snorkelling or even full-day leisure on the resort beach of Lake Kivu.

Day5. Cross back to Kigali and departure flight

The driver guide will pick you up from the hotel and transfer you back to Kigali crossing the border. Arrive and have an optional city tour in Kigali where you get a chance to visit some of the notable attractions like the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, local markets, art and gallery centres and many more. Be dropped at the airport and this marks the end of the safari.
